First US EMV Transaction
Gilbarco Announces First US Fuel Dispenser EMV “Chip” Transaction
While thousands of gas stations accept EMV chip cards for purchases inside their convenience stores, the conversion from magnetic-stripe payment cards to chip card acceptance at automated fuel dispensers has been slow going because of cost, supply issues, and the physical challenges of retrofitting older pumps. With all the delays in the fuel-dispenser liability shift, Gilbarco Veeder-Root has finally announced the successful processing of the first US EMV™ “chip” transaction at a fuel dispenser, utilizing Gilbarco’s Passport Point-of-Sale (POS) and Encore fuel dispensers on the First Data network. With simple software upgrades, Passport sites can be easily configured and enabled for full EMV transactions at the dispenser for all major card types.
